How To Change A Thermostat In An 02 Jetta Diesel

  • #1

after looking through the TDI 101 how to's, I need to inquire a question. What are some of your tips nearly changing the thermostat and housing on a 2000 Golf TDI?

cheers

Yep, just utilize OEM from Volkswagen (or whomever can get you one) and a new housing. Clip the new stat on to the housing subsequently installing the o-band. Super easy job, simply 2 screws.

Also, merely use the spring-type hose clamp (you can reuse them), as these non just provide constant uniform tension on the hose, but cannot crush the plastic nipple. The hoses themselves generally final forever unless they get contaminated with fuel or oil from a leak or something.

For the relative cost of the new housing, I agree with others on getting a new one. If you want to preserve the integrity of the original, apply or make a hook virtually 8 inches long to hook the loop on the thermostat and pull that equally you stone the housing free. And then you will have a proficient spare with the pins intact for next time...

Yeah, i remember i dropped that bolt every bit well, very frustrating. Plan for that and the mess.

If y'all program, to change to coolant, keep in listen y'all'll have a difficult fourth dimension draining information technology if the thermostat is cold and then you might equally well remove it and and then drain

I take a pocket-sized scrap of newspaper and wrap information technology around the bolt head and so shove the bolt into the 10MM socket. Then I utilize a small extension and get the commodities started. When you lot pull out the socket the paper falls or sometimes stays in the socket. Y'all can blow it away with compressed air.

A small magnet in your socket also works really well.

Because the o-band sticks to the iron cake, holding the thermostat backside information technology, that's why. I never even bother to try and save the plastic housing anyways, every bit once they have been tightened, heat cycled many times, and loosened, the likelihood of a leak is just too smashing.

I have assembled thermostat "assemblies" all ready to go for all the more than popular VAG engines sitting in baggies on the shelf here. :)

Thermostat change observations

Merely changed the stat last dark, here are my observations:
ane. Hard to go a wire to hook onto the thermostat since yous tin't run across it
2. My bolts too had 5mm allen heads so with the proper allen key it'due south a tight fit & may assistance preventing losing the bolts
3. Despite the inaccuracy of the temp estimate, before the change it just went up 1/iv-1/3 of the mode, & later on information technology goes to 1/two & stays in that location.

Yup, get a long ball-head allen key/socket & new bolts to become with your new housing. Overall, it'south non a bad job.

Yep, ALH is cake... await until all the CBEA/CJAA engines need them.

Place a large drain pan under the engine past the dorsum of the oil pan. No lost antifreeze. No reason to lose any anitfreeze with this job. Bleed the coolant from the oil cooler rubber hose next to the thermstat after the lower radiator hose is drained. Super easy task.

I have a recently acquired car with unknown service history. Should I supercede my thermostat as PM earlier winter hits.... Or just leave it and run across how winter treats me...

Are there any loftier temp stats available with the important OEM locking tabs?
(I'm in cold climate and have no EGR cooler)

High temp stat won't brand it warm up faster, just run at a college temp.

Yes I understand that. I am not afterward quicker warmups with a higher temp stat. I plan to have a frostheater for the morning warmups anyway. I have had good experience with diesels that run slightly warmer operating temps, since they tend to lose heat so fast if not driving under much load or when parked. Plus, it might make it easier for engine to keep a higher operating temp when I telephone call for full heat inside the cab.
